Feel Player or Technical Player

Identifying if you are a Feel Player or a Technical Player

Golfers fall into two broad categories: feel players and technical players. A feel golfer relies on instinct, rhythm, and body awareness, learning primarily through trial and error. Their practice is more creative, with a focus on shot-making rather than perfect repetition. Their pre-shot routines tend to be quicker and trusted, centering on the target and intended shot shape.

On the other hand, a technical golfer approaches the game with a structured, mechanics-driven mindset. They focus on grip, stance, alignment, and specific swing positions, often rehearsing in controlled settings to engrain exact movements. Technical practice uses drills and positional swing aids to work on repetitiveness.

These two styles also differ in their approach and how they adapt on the course. Feel golfers trust their senses, adjusting based on tempo, grip pressure, or the sensation of a swing. They measure success by ball flight and how shot feels coming off the clubface. In contrast, technical golfers analyze each shot based on mechanical execution, sometimes using video analysis or launch monitors to identify flaws. When faced with a poor shot, the feel golfer will tweak their rhythm or touch, while the technical golfer will correct specific form issues, such as swing path or shoulder turn.

Both approaches have strengths and weaknesses. Feel golfers often excel in adaptability, touch around the greens, and creativity under pressure, but may struggle with consistency when their timing is off. Technical golfers are strong in repeatability and consistent ball striking, but can overthink their swing during play, leading to tightness and doubt. Ultimately, the most successful players find a balance—combining the rhythm and freedom of the feel player with the precision and reliability of the technical player. By understanding where you player fit best is crucial so the player can tailor their practice and mindset and play to their strengths while improving their weaknesses.
